Spotted cruelty? Help stop it and get paid.

Have you ever seen serious animal cruelty or neglect and not known what to do about it? If you’re like me, I’m sure you have. I’m sure you’ve seen a poor dog panting alone inside a car in the blistering summer heat and thought, “what person would be mindless enough to cause that suffering?” Or maybe you’ve had a neighbor who left their dogs outside all day and night with no access to shelter? Whatever you’ve seen, if you had a chance to help the animal at risk, would you? A new statewide program is aimed at giving you good reason to do so. Read the rest of this entry →

Denver’s New and Improved Municipal Animal Shelter

From the silly little word play that begins the official press release, “Denver’s pet population will soon get a new lease on life…” to the ribbon cutting ceremony planned on June 11, you can tell that city officials are eager and excited to unveil their new, state of the art animal shelter. And why shouldn’t they be? With this facility, Denver is moving past the outdated image many people have of a run down dog pound and showing it truly cares about animal welfare.

The new Denver Municipal Animal Shelter is more than twice the size of the old site, was designed with the comfort of our furry friends in mind every step of the way, and includes shelter space for urban wildlife. It’s truly a reflection of Denver residents’ care and concern for animals. And if I were thinking about getting a new pet any time soon, it would be the first place I’d look.

The big opening is set for June 11th and will feature prizes, reduced adoption fees and tours for the public. Go “like” their facebook page and check out some pictures of pets currently in need of a good home.

Come to Chomp and find your furry soul mate

This is Brutus, currently available for adoption at the DFL as of 11:30am

Tonight’s Chomp is shaping up to be something special. Between the delicious menu that Melanie and our chefs have put together, the cool prizes we have to raffle off and the live music after dinner, it should be pretty epic. One thing that we haven’t really mentioned yet is the chance for you to meet some adoptable dogs from the Denver Dumb Friends League.

The Dumb Friends League is one of the many great animal shelters in the metro area. Its doors are always open for any animal in need and it cares for more than 20 thousand pets each year.  In addition to adoptions, the DFL has humane education programs for children, cruelty investigations throughout much of the state, and mobile low cost spay and neuter clinics. They also work to craft and pass important legislation to better animals’ lives in our state.

Tonight the DFL will be at Chomp with a couple of dogs that are currently in need of a good home. If you’ve been thinking about getting a pet, it’ll be just as good of a time as ever to find the right furry companion. Even if you’re not, I’m sure the dogs are going to be SUPER cute, so make sure to get a good head pat or belly rub in!

Don’t Go Shoppin’ For Love

This is Einstein. Yes, he's still just as adorable. This is Einstein. His head looked kind of heart shaped in this picture. I thought it was fitting.

One of my biggest pet peeves (pun intended) is when people claim to be “the world’s biggest animal lover” but maintain a meat-centric diet. Screaming about the cruelty of puppy mills while chomping on a cheeseburger is both illogical and hypocritical. With that said, I think that we veg-folk can be guilty of the opposite at times. It’s not that we’ve forgotten the sad truths that motivated good ol’ Bob Barker’s daily plea for us to spay and neuter our pets, it’s just that the unbelievable disregard for life inside of modern factory farms makes the issue seem insignificant in comparison.

So, in case Valentine’s Day has you feeling all lonely and wanting something fluffy to cuddle, allow me to issue a simple reminder: don’t shop, adopt! Don’t be the good animal activist who screws up and impulsively buys a puppy or kitten from a “responsible pet store.” There are literally thousands of animals in need of a good home in the Denver metro area.

Check out this list of Denver area shelters. Also, just an fyi, if you are thinking about getting a pet right now, the Dumb Friends League is currently offering an adoption special (all cats and dogs 1 year or older have a $14 adoption fee in honor of Valentine’s Day) through the 18th.
