Wearing Fox Tails is a Thing… Seriously.

I have been traveling a lot this summer, and on my travels I have noticed a growing fashion trend in major cities. This trend is, wearing fox tails?! Everyone from Victoria Beckham to Kanye West is sporting these tails in the name of “fashion”. I don’t see the appeal, not only do you look like an idiot, but you are killing innocent animals to do so. And don’t be fooled by the clever marketing of these tails, animals die for them. The band, Automatic Loveletter, was selling tails on the Warped Tour and went to the extent of telling us that the animals aren’t slaughtered (Huh?). My only thought was “What, they just fall off? Do they give them to you?”. Here I thought that fur was a dying trend and that most people accept the fact that fur was unnecessary cruelty, then this trend comes out of left field. Here are some facts about fur: Animals are often anally electrocuted, kept in small cramped spaces, they are left outside exposed to the elements, their diseases go untreated and all for something so arbitrary. Please don’t make yourself look like you don’t think or care about animals, don’t buy these foxtails! Also, please take the time to email the clothing retailer Karma Loop and the band Automatic Loveletter and tell them to stop selling these animal’s tails and if you see someone wearing one, kindly remind them that the tail isn’t theirs, it belongs to the animal.

Creative iPad Activism

I had to share this video. This iPad app developed by an Austrian organization, Association Against Animal Factories, is such a creative way to raise awareness about the cruelty involved with the fur industry. When the ad is activated, the reader realizes that instead of turning the page, each stroke creates a laceration that drips blood onto the fur coat. Check out the video and be inspired to use your individual talents to create new and interesting ways of getting our message heard!

Friend or Faux?

A variety of fake meats.

How do you feel about fake?

The debate about whether imitation animal products help or hurt the vegan cause is not new. It’s also no closer to being resolved. Whether we’re talking about “fake meat” or faux fur, there’s much disagreement both within and outside of the vegan community about how those products reflect on our cause.

Does it make us hypocrites to eschew animal products but embrace man-made products intended to mimic them? Are they facilitators or barriers to convincing others to consider a vegan lifestyle? Read the rest of this entry →

How to Talk About Fur

How to Discuss the Fur Industry from Let Live Foundation on Vimeo.

The Animal ACTion Network meetup is having a fur protest tomorrow (Thursday, December 23) at Mark Lloyds Furs (263 Josephine St) from 11:30am to 2:30pm. Hopefully you can go support the demonstration and have some meaningful conversations with holiday shoppers about fur. This video from the Let Live animal rights conference provides some great thoughtful talking points that will make you a more effective activist. If you have some time to spare, listen to what a veteran fur protester has to say in the video.
