carrotmob 6: Atomic Tamale!

It’s time to get together for another carrotmob! Plants & Animals is always on the look out for businesses in Denver that have made the effort to provide vegan options, and then we all go support them. A carrotmob is a way to show off group buying power by rewarding businesses that are making conscious decisions for a better world.

Carrotmob 6 will be at Atomic Tamale! Atomic Tamale, which just opened in September, is a little vegan and vegetarian tamale shop located inside La Muerta apparel at 649 Sante Fe Dr. They’re not a sit down restaurant, everything’s for pick up and cash only too! But they do have some tables and chairs outside (as long as the weather’s nice, cross your fingers!).

Join us Sunday, October 30th at 12pm to participate in the carrotmob. All you gotta do is show up and buy some vegan tamales and as an added bonus, they’ll be giving away vegan menudo with every purchase!

Can’t make it at noon? That’s OK. You’ll still make an impact if you buy vegan tamales on Sunday at any time, they’re open from 11-8pm. Let us know you’re coming by RSVPing to our Facebook event. That way we know what kind of numbers showed up for carrotmob day!

carrotmob 4: The Shoppe

Time to get together again for a carrotmob! Once a month we find a business in Denver that has made the effort to provide vegan options, and we all go support them. A carrotmob is a way to show off group buying power by rewarding businesses that make conscious decisions for a better world.

This month’s carrotmob will be at The Shoppe, that cute little bakery in the Bluebird district that specializes in cupcakes and cereal. Since they opened, The Shoppe has always provided a vegan cupcake option. It’s little things like this that make being vegan in Denver a little sweeter, so we want to thank them. And get a little sugar rush in the process.

Join us this Saturday, May 21st at 2pm to participate in the carrotmob. All you gotta do is show up and buy a vegan cupcake (or more). Just think of how cool it will look to have a bunch of vegans all in one place. We brighten up any room, even one as colorful as The Shoppe.

Can’t make it at 2pm? That’s OK. You’ll still make an impact if you buy a vegan cupcake on Saturday at any time. Let us know you’re coming by RSVPing to our Facebook event. That way we know what kind of numbers showed up for carrotmob day. The Shoppe is at 3103 E. Colfax, near the corner of St. Paul (there’s a little map after the jump).

Carrotmob 3: Vegan Grocery Shopping

It’s time for the third edition of Plants & Animals Denver’s monthly carrotmob to showcase vegan buying power…

Whole Foods Cherry Creek

This month we are doing our grocery shopping together at the store that has helped make Chomp possible: Whole Foods Market at Cherry Creek (2375 E. 1st ave., Denver). The store’s support has been pivotal in helping Plants & Animals Denver grow, and it is also a great resource for Denver vegans. So let’s get together and buy the stuff we need anyway at the place that has shown great commitment to the Denver veg community. The carrotmob will be meeting at the produce department at 1pm this Saturday, March 12th. And to prove we were there, let’s all agree to buy at least one specific product that any vegan could love…

I hope you’ll feel like picking up your usual staples and goodies, and we all know how easy it is to get carried away in the beautiful aisles of Whole Foods Market. But let’s make sure Whole Foods notices that a big mob of vegans came through. The easiest way to do that is for all of us to focus on a specific product. We talked it over at our volunteer meeting yesterday and decided we should all make sure to pick up a half-gallon of Earth Balance Original Soymilk. Read the rest of this entry →

Ahimsa Closeout Sale

The bad news: Ahimsa Footwear’s brick-and-mortar location is closing down. The good news: this is a great time to find a deal on some vegan shoes and accessories. And even better: you can do it with us when we go to buy Sheese at Ahimsa for our second carrotmob. We’ll be there at 1pm on Saturday to get our gourmet cheese (last chance to buy it locally?), check out the sale, and say thanks to Ahimsa for being so supportive of Chomp and P&A. Luckily the  online store will still be active, so don’t stop visiting ahimsafootwear.com when you need new kicks.

Let us know if you’re coming: Carrotmob Event on facebook.

Sheesemob | Ahimsa Footwear

A new carrotmob! We’re all buying some Sheese…

We’ve decided to make carrotmobs a monthly P&A event. Our first one at Hi Rise Bakery was successful and got a good response, so let’s see if we can get some committed vegans to get together every second Saturday of the month. We’ll start small, but with your help, over time we can make our monthly carrotmob the sort of thing that businesses fight for. The possibilities are there, so let’s get to the details on carrotmob #2: Sheesemob.

Sheese is a gourmet vegan cheese product that comes from Scotland. With a firm texture reminiscent of actual cow-cheese, it is available in 9 varieties. I have tried the cheddar, which was fantastic, and I have heard that the gouda is unreal. Why haven’t you seen it before? It’s a bit tricky to find. In fact, the only place I know of that carries Sheese may be a bit of a surprise: Ahimsa Footwear. Yup. Colorado’s only all-vegan boutique has vegan cheese in addition to a huge selection of shoes, bags, books, hats, and accessories. If you’ve been meaning to check out Ahimsa, here’s your chance to do it with us.

Carrotmob #2 mission: Buy a block of Sheese (retail ~$8)
Where: Ahimsa Footwear (1668 Marion St., Denver)
When: Saturday, February 12th at 1pm

The great thing about this sort of event is that you can show up late if you want. The main goal is to create a visual and monetary uptick in a business’ traffic. Hopefully you can come with the mob at 1pm so we can get some good photos of vegan buying power, and use them to build momentum for future carrotmobs. But if you can’t make it at that time, your Sheese purchase that day will surely go noticed, and your contribution to the mob will be counted (the shop is open from 12-5 on Saturdays). This is a way to thank Ahimsa for providing a great product and store for vegans. It gives us a reason to get together. And it helps us show off our numbers. Positive activism.

Future P&A carrotmobs could have the potential to influence veg-friendly business practices. That is where we really want to get to- the point where we can dangle the reward (a big influx of revenue and positive attention) in front of a few competing businesses. The winner, who does the most for our vegan objective, gets a big carrotmob and the notoriety of being a go-to spot on the map of the Denver vegan community. But before we get to that point, you gotta come buy some Sheese with us…

Bagels and Coffee

We had our first carrotmob on Sunday. The snow fell that morning, but a good group of us still made our way to Hi Rise bakery for bagels and coffee. We were getting together to thank Hi Rise for adding vegan cream cheese spreads to their menu.

Cranberry cashew spread on a blueberry bagel

I scored a tub of red pepper and herb spread to take home. Really good on crackers. Tortillas too. People responded well to this event, so I think we’ll do it again. Maybe even a carrotmob every month. I’d love to see us build up a group of 20, 30, or more dedicated mobbers who can help us make Denver more veg-friendly by encouraging businesses to add vegan options. Got any ideas for a carrotmob?

Hi Rise bakery is on the corner of 22nd & Larimer. They offer a variety of vegan options, so stop by sometime.

Carrotmob at Hi*Rise 1/9/11

We’re doing our first carrotmob, and we need you!

Hi*Rise bakery at 22nd & Larimer

The friendly folks at Denver’s Hi*Rise bagel shop have done something nice for vegans, so we want to do something nice for them. Join us at Hi*Rise on Sunday, January 9th at 10am for bagels and coffee as a way to say thanks to the bakery for adding their awesome new vegan bagel spreads. They have had tasty hummus for a while, but last month they unveiled some new vegan cream-cheese spreads to go on their house-made bagels (most of which are also vegan). Hi*Rise is located at 2162 Larimer St., 2 blocks east of Coors Field.

One of the stated goals of Plants & Animals Denver is to make Denver more a vegan-friendly city. I can’t think of a better way to help make that happen than to get a bunch of vegans together and reward a local business for creating something just for us. Hi*Rise is independently owned and it is a nice spot to meet a friend, have lunch, grab some Ozo Coffee, or (lucky for us) find some veg-friendly options. Mark your calendar for 1/9/11 because we need to show Denver businesses that vegans have buying power.

Hi*Rise knows we’re coming, so let’s get a big carrotmob ready. Tell a friend, and come hang out with some new pals. I’m hoping to see at least a dozen vegans there, but I bet we can get a lot more. Keep an eye out for a facebook event, and let me know if you have any questions. dylon(at)plantsanimals(dot)org

See you January 9th!
